Welcome to Lady Nostalgia
80s and 90s culture, memories, and nostalgia
As far back as I can remember, I loved movies. Not just movies, but entertainment in all its forms. Movies, sitcoms, and music.
Born in 1979 and raised by a single mom in Houston, Texas, I grew up immersed in the colorful decades of the 80s and later the 90s. When I was spending time with family, after school or on days my mom worked, I was usually swimming, listening to music, or watching something, coloring something, or daydreaming about being an actress. At six years old, I declared I would be a dancer after seeing Flashdance, then a singer after Grease, and an actress after Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
By the time I was four, I knew how to work the VCR and could play all the things my grandpa had taped—usually Three’s Company! Handing the newspaper to my mom so she could check the movie times is such a core memory for me. And I have so many others to go along with it. Shopping for back to school clothes, going to the mall, all the toys, the commercials, the candy, and all the other special things that existed between those two decades are my happy space.
In 1987, we moved to Portugal, where my mom is from. It was a very hard time in my childhood. Suddenly, the 80s culture was left back in the States, along with my family and my favorite rituals, and there was barely anything kid friendly for an American 8 year old like myself. We stayed for seven years, until 1994, and moved back right before I turned 15. It was culture shock all over again. During those seven years, I missed quite a few things that never quite made it to Portugal. These are what I refer to as the lost years, just so you know 🙂
Now I’m 46, and my nostalgic inner child has been calling for a space to pour my love of all things nostalgia into. A few year ago I told a woman at party that I loved nostalgia and she called me Lady Nostalgia and I thought it was not only cute but it suited me well :)
In my daily life, I’m Sofia. I’m a former professional organizer turned spiritual mentor, channeler, and medium, and a lifelong creative. I love graphic design, fashion, good food, tending to my space, traveling when I can, and helping others find more meaning and ease in their lives.
I also have a separate Substack called Sofia's Cosmic Kitchen, where I offer channeled messages, reflections, and intuitive guidance.
Thanks to the internet and social media, I get to interact with and feel this nostalgia in some form every day. A familiar sitcom playing in the background. The Instagram accounts I follow. My love of talk show interviews with actors, directors, and musicians. I have an innate interest in all these things that has never left me. These are not only memories of mine, but very likely yours too, if you grew up around the same time I did.
I look forward to sharing my favorite movie quotes, playlists, clips, and photos of all my favorite 80s and 90s things. I’m excited to connect with you and share back and forth about our mutual love of all these things, the memories, the moments, and what they still mean to us. Together, we can co-create this space.
I want to share this giddy joy I have for this stuff. This love. This cozy comfort. This nostalgia.
I want to share it with you because if you love these things too, you are my people.
I’m Lady Nostalgia.
